Max is a 5 year old whippet. He is now living in Michigan with a former PAWS family. Actually, I’m pretty sure they will always be a PAWS family.

UPDATE: Thanks in part to our help, the family has successfully found homes for all of their puppies! They decided to keep one, but still had eleven to find homes for. A special thanks to Yayoi Blackman, one of our volunteers, who interpreted for us. With her help, we were able to find homes with military families for some of these puppies.
Some of these beautiful puppies this family had would have likely been put down if they couldn’t find homes soon. There are a lot of rumors of how abandoned and unwanted animals are treated in Japan. The staggering truth is that 89% of these animals are put down. (This includes pets at stores like Homes and Ave. When those animals grow past their ‘cute phase’ and aren’t adopted, they are usually put down.) The idea of animal shelters is new here and sadly most people would rather put puppies and kittens down than have their adult pets fixed. It is a cultural difference for sure. We are currently looking into reaching out to a local facility to try and help save some of these abandoned pets.

We recently found out about a family offbase who are the proud owners of two pure-bred Central Asian Shepherds. This breed of dog is from Russia and they are magnificent animals. The males grow to be around 85 kilograms or 187 lbs. Imagine around the same size as a St. Bernard. The females are 50 kilograms, or 110 lbs. This is the size of a German Shepherd. They are a protector breed, originally used to take care of flocks of sheep, keeping the wolves away. As such, their ears and tails are docked.

This photo is for example only.
The puppies were born on February 15th and are ready for adoption. There are 6 NO PUPPIES LEFT!!
The family is asking for 20,000 yen, about $220 USD. The price is exceptionally low for a rare, pure bred dog like this. They are having trouble placing these dogs as in Japan large-breed dogs are not popular. The family’s main concern is that anyone taking one of these puppies understands how to take good care of them. They also want to know that if you ever leave Japan, you will not leave the dog behind.
If you are interested in adopting one of these puppies, please email us. The family does not speak English but we can set up a meeting on your behalf. Please don’t let language issues keep you from potentially taking in one of these adorable puppies.
